Book Description
This publication features a collection of images from Selected Pages, an exhibition showcasing the work of Cuban artist Gertrudis Rivalta. Curated by Jacqueline Loss and Thomas Nickles Project and co-sponsored by the Hemispheric Institute at New York University, Selected Pages was on view at the Thomas Nickles Project from March to June 2022. This digital publication expands on the original exhibition catalog, offering an introduction to Rivalta’s work and a biography of the artist. The images are divided into two categories: canvases and dioramas. The canvases are large-format, sequined pieces in which Rivalta reinterprets the covers of the Cuban magazines Mujeres and Muchacha to address issues such as Cuban subjectivity, race, gender, and Soviet influence on the island, among others. The dioramas—some flat and others three-dimensional—are greyscale, showcasing various cutouts of figures and the characters Cuquita and the Black matryoshka, who appear in different works by Rivalta.
